Suffering from deafness does not represent a major obstacle to artistic success for Ni Putu Krismoni.

A student of the Special Needs Schools (Sekolah Luar Biasa – SLB) in Bangli, this 3rd grade student just won top honors in a provincial painting contest.

Balipost.com reports that Krismoni, who hails from Seokadang in Bali, will represent the entire Island in a national painting competition in Surabaya, East Java in September of this year.

The head of SLB Bangli, I Made Sudarma, said that Krismoni is now busy preparing for the competition in Surabaya.

The young woman’s talent and painting skills have been nurtured by her art teacher Ketut Gede Susana – a young man who is one of Bali’s most talented artists in his own right. Friends and fellow students at SLB Bangli are hopeful that Krismoni will be able to at least match the performance of another alumna Ni Wayan Ariandi who recently secured 3rd place in the national painting competition.

Krismoni’s art teacher, I Ketut Gede Susana said he encounters little difficulty in instructing the young woman and the tens of other students with various disabilities under his charge. The key, said Susana, is for the teacher to understand the individual character of each student and encourage their full participation in all activities offered by the school.

“If a student is not in the mood to paint, we can’t force them. If we try to force them to paint, they will lose any desire to draw and even become angry. Anyone teaching students with special needs must always remain patient. The needs are different depending on if a student is blind, deaf or has other handicaps. We must always encourage them so the want to paint,” explained Susana.

He continued, saying that Krismoni is dedicated to improving her skills for the coming national competition in Surabaya. Susana said the SLB never sets targets to win in provincial or national competitions. Saying, "We only try to educate them so they can participate in an optimal way in any event and give their best effort."

The artwork of the students at SLB Bangli are becoming much in demand, with sales proceeds used to purchase materials to allow continuing art education.
